SACCO management software for cooperatives across Africa

Savings and credit cooperatives work in similar ways across East Africa, but the rules and names differ from country to country. SaccoMonitor is built in and for Uganda first; this page explains what carries over and what to check before using it elsewhere.

How SACCO models differ across East Africa

The core idea — members pool savings and lend to each other — is the same everywhere. Regulation and structure are not. In broad terms:

CountryHow SACCOs are typically organised
UgandaCooperatives under the Registrar of Cooperatives; savings-taking SACCOs supervised as Tier 4 institutions by UMRA. Many Emyooga and Parish Development Model SACCOs.
KenyaDeposit-taking Saccos are licensed and supervised by SASRA; other Saccos fall under the cooperative authorities. Many large employer-based Saccos.
TanzaniaSACCOS are cooperative societies under the cooperative development authorities, with microfinance legislation covering savings and lending.
RwandaUmurenge SACCOs in each sector alongside other SACCOs, with microfinance supervision by the central bank.

This is a general overview, not legal advice. Rules change; confirm current requirements with the regulator in your country.

What works the same in any country

  • Member records with next of kin, documents and member groups.
  • Savings products, share capital in whole shares, and fixed deposits with maturity.
  • Loan products with flat, reducing-balance or declining-balance interest, guarantors and approval levels.
  • Double-entry accounting with a trial balance, income statement and balance sheet.
  • Role-based access, maker–checker approvals and an audit trail.
  • Reports in Excel and PDF.

What to check before using SaccoMonitor outside Uganda

  • Currency: set your SACCO’s currency; reports use it throughout.
  • Phone numbers: enter them with the country code (for example +254…). Numbers starting with 0 are read as Ugandan.
  • SMS: automatic messages use Africa’s Talking; check coverage and sender-ID rules in your country.
  • Chart of accounts: review the standard accounts against your regulator’s reporting format and add accounts you need.
  • Language: the system is in English.

If those fit, the rest of SaccoMonitor — members, savings, loans and accounting — works the same way.

Honest note

We only describe markets and features we support today. Country-specific pages will be added when there is something genuinely specific to say.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, where the SACCO’s way of working matches the system: member savings, shares and loans with double-entry accounting. Each SACCO sets its own currency, and phone numbers can be entered in international format with the country code.

Not yet. The system and its reports are in English.

No. It produces the underlying financial and portfolio reports in Excel; returns in the format your regulator requires still need to be prepared from them.
